The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

Hears true stories about communication break-throughs on the Red Line, modern-day labor struggles and African-American self-defense networks in the post-war American South from:
Hari Jones, curator of the African-American Civil War Memorial
Rita Daniels, Executive Director, Literacy Volunteers and Advocates (LVA)
Andrew Korfhage, Writer, Storyteller
Kathy McGregor, Registered Nurse and Labor Organizer, National Nurses Organizing Committee

Featuring live music by Sadie Dingfelder (violin), Matthew Malamud (violin), Vince Kane (classical guitar), Steve Hay (flute)

Sadie Dingfelder was initiated into the terrifying world of improvisation when, in 2004, she was recruited off her front porch to play with a bluegrass band. Though she’s been playing classical violin since age 10, it took many on-the-house drinks to get Sadie onstage without the comfort of sheet music. Now, she’s hooked, thanks to very fun shows at the 9:30 Club, the Red and the Black, and the Black Cat with bands including Junior League and, most recently, Hot Coffee, Mississippi. For DC’s Big Read, she looks forward to returning to her classical roots. Photo: www.rachel-eisley.com
