Help us choose the best of SpeakeasyDC

Posted July 27th, 2010 by Amy Saidman

Hey everyone!! We are putting together a show (maybe 2)  of our all-time favorite stories in the last few years and we’d like your input. So, dig back in your memory-banks and tell us what your favorite stories have been.  You don’t need to know the name of the person or when you heard it, just give us enough details to help us identify it and add it to our list of possibles for the show.  Keep in mind that since 2007, we have performed at HR57, Cada Vez, Station 9, Source Theatre, Rumberos, Chief Ike’s, Town Danceboutique, the Atlas Arts Center, and various venues as part of the Capital Fringe Fest. Feel free to pick favorites from the open mic or any one of our ensemble productions, including both Sucker for Love Valentine specials, Chocolate Jesus, Sin Show, Revenge of the Cat-Headed Baby, Showcase Showdown, Mommie Dearest, Who’s Your Daddy, The Big Read, and Wetbacks, Aliens & Towelheads: Stories from the First Generation.

To share your favorites, please post a comment by Aug 15, 2010. Thanks!

Hey Speakeasy DC. Long time fan, first time commenter. Would it be possible for you to post a list of all the themes over the last couple years by month to help jog our memories?

I’d also like to nominate not only all of my awesome stories, but “Kevin Boggs Stands Up to Jewel” and “Chris Love Teaches the Hiaku” as I’ve self-named them.

It’s really hard to choose out of all the millions of great stories. I have a ton of Speakeasy videos posted at: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=4B6E0CED265E7576

And there are more at: http://www.vimeo.com/speakeasydc for people’s reference.

And personally I would love to hear Kevin’s Jewel story again or Chris Loves coming out story.

Love this idea! A few:
1) The girl (in April) who talked about the PSYNCE license plate. Brilliant.
2) The guy (in April) who talked about his camping experience with juvenile offenders.
3) Latif Doman – March 2009 – Story about his experiences as an attorney
4) Anything by Seaton Smith, but particularly his Sin Show

Thanks folks. List of themes will take some time, so for now I recommend these two links

I also kind of believe that your true favorites will be remembered.

Edwin Kubal’s story about becoming a father — classic!

I hear that Jon Stroud guy is really funny. What ever happened to him?

Vijay Nathan’s story about her birthday party at Chuck-E Cheez is one of my all-time favorites.

I would agree Vijay’s Pizzas/Pizzazz story. And Kevin Boggs’s Bono/Bosnian story.

Of course you always put out good stories…

However the one that my friends and I found most captivating and emotionally taken by, both laughing and crying, was the woman who talked about the 1000 cranes during the liars club held at the DC Improv in 2009 Capitol Fringe Festival. The entire room was silenced by her when she told her story, yet when she weaved in comedy everyone laughed. When she reached the end, an incredible love story of how her fiance proposed to her, people were in awe and crying. One of the best stories I and my companion have ever heard. In fact, it was soooo good and beautiful that we almost considered her a liar (no love story is that wonderful). It just goes to show that love like that still exists….and that good story telling does too. Thank you for all you do.

Actually now that I think about it, I am not sure it was part of the Fringe Festival, but definitely part of the Liars Club at DC Improv.

Chris Love has such hilariously funny stories, but with depth and always a caring message or two. My all time favorite is “Bugs Eat Mr. Love” but his Mom in Paris/coming out story is also amazing. Can you have more than one of Chris’s in your collection

I loved Andrew Korfhage’s “naked butt/apple cups” story from the ’09 Sucker show, as well as the story he did for an open mic about jumping off a cliff.

Jennifer Moore and her story about IceCream just rocks my world!!!!! You go girl! :)

14 Patrick Smith commented on July 28th, 2010 at 11:16 am

Jennifer Moore as “Pen” the office mate who tries to prove herself by eating a dozen donuts. One of the best laughs I had in years!

15 LizEN commented on July 28th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Jennifer Moore Howe, Jennifer Moore Howe, Jennifer Moore Howe, Jennifer Moore Howe! Whether she’s talking about Hagen Daz icecream or donuts or relationships (always) she is the BEST.

I agree … any Jennifer Howe story that involves food.

22 Joseph Price commented on July 29th, 2010 at 9:11 am

@Mr. L-O-V-E, that’s every story…

Yes, that Piscitelli person’s Blue Balls story rocks! I’m voting for that.

Jessica Piscitelli: Blue Balls – hilarious!

25 Adam Ruben commented on July 29th, 2010 at 11:21 am

I don’t remember the performer’s name, but there was a great story this February (I think) about someone held at gunpoint in a convenience store in Latin America. Some kind of penguin-themed candy was involved.

26 Len commented on July 29th, 2010 at 12:24 pm

blue balls! great story, great twist at end.

27 Mr. L-O-V-E commented on July 31st, 2010 at 10:11 am

I forgot. Vijay and her sisters taping Three’s Company for their father. And from Father’s Day: Sofia’s Drake Hotel story. And the vastectomy story.

And Jennifer Howe and food.
