True, Live, Personal Stories (in 7min or less)

Thanks for your interest in the SpeakeasyDC’s storytelling open mic! We couldn’t have a show without your courage and creativity. Here’s what you need to know about telling stories on our stage.

You must tell a true a story. It’s not a stage for stand-up, poetry, readings, fiction, or folktales.
You’ll have seven minutes to tell your story. We are pretty strict about this, so don’t go over or you will be cut off!
You must incorporate the open mic theme into your story. Don’t worry, we’ve got a lot of themes!
We expect that you have seen at least one show before signing up. We also tend to give priority to first-time performers.

Getting on the Stage
(not the usual jibber jabber, please read!)

All good? Ready to go? Great, here’s the process for getting on the stage.

1. Check your calendar to make sure you’re available for the performance and the mandatory rehearsal. See schedule below.

2. Fill out the form below.

3. Call 202-630-9549 to leave a 2-minute voicemail description of your story.

4. (if accepted…) Attend the mandatory rehearsal.

5. Show up to the show a half-hour early and rock the open mic.

Signing up does not guarantee you a slot, but we do the best we can to get everyone on stage. Best to go ahead and prepare. Stephanie Garibaldi, our education director, will contact you 3-4 weeks before the show to confirm your participation. Feel free to contact her atstephanie@speakeasydc.org if you have questions or have not heard from her within 2 weeks of your expected performance. Please note that in order to give as many people as possible the opportunity to tell on our stage, we ask that people do not sign up for two consecutive months.

Rehearsals are held on Sundays from 3-6pm at St. Stephen’s Church, 1525 Newton St, NW 20010.

Agreement

Please read and check to agree to the following:
I understand that this is storytelling -- not stand-up or poetry or a reading -- and that there are no notes permitted
I understand that I will not be allowed to go beyond the seven-minute limit, even if my story is not finished.
I understand that I must incorporate the theme of the night.
I understand that I may not use notes.
I understand that I am expected to attend a run-through approximately 2 weeks before performance and it is up to me to consult schedule on website.
I understand that I must arrive by 7:45 pm or my slot may be given away.
Filling out this form does not guarantee a slot on the open mic. We will contact you within 3-4 weeks of performance to confirm.

Audio/Video/PhotographyRelease

If you would like to be considered for SpeakeasyDC's audio and video recordings, please read the following consent form below and indicate that you agree to the terms.
"I hereby grant to SpeakeasyDC and its designees a nonexclusive license to record and distribute this storytelling performance as they deem necessary, whether it be on the web, on CD or DVD, broadcast on radio or television, used in a film, etc.
"I hereby grant to SpeakeasyDC and its designees permission to photograph me during my performance and use the photograph however they deem necessary, wheter for website, eblasts, Facebook, publicity, or other use).
